How do I access databases from off-campus?
FLITE databases are available by clicking
on the "Databases" link off the Library homepage. Most of them are available from off campus.
To access databases from off-campus, you will be asked to
login with your last name, the barcode number starting with 22937 from the back of your Ferris ID, and a PIN. You must be a currently enrolled student or a member of the faculty or staff to have off-campus database access. If you experience problems logging on, please call (231) 591-2669 or (800) 4-FERRIS (ext. 2669), or stop by the Check Out Desk at the Library.
If the library is closed you can fill out the following
Request Form.
What is my Ferris ID barcode number?
To use FLITE databases from off-campus, you will need your Ferris ID barcode number. On the back of the Ferris
ID is a 14 digit number that starts with 22937; this is your barcode number.
What is my PIN?
If you are new to Ferris (Fall 2006) your pin is based on your birthdate in the form MMDDYY. For example, if your birthdate is September 3, 1981, your pin is 090381. Otherwise your PIN is probably the last four digits of your social security number. In either case it is set by the Library. You can change your PIN by accessing your account in the Online Catalog and choosing "patron record" from the pull down bar. Log in using your assigned PIN and follow directions for changing your password.
What is a proxy server?
A proxy server is a computer that is specially designed to authenticate users,
i.e., assure that only Ferris community people gain access to certain files. When you access
the databases from off-campus, the proxy server recognizes that you are not on the Ferris campus
and then asks for verification of your status.
What do I do if I get an error message when I try to login?
If you get an error message when you try to login, please call
(231) 591-3602.
Will the proxy server work with all browsers?
You can access the databases from off-campus with most current browsers
including Netscape and Internet Explorer. However, AOL, MSN and CompuServe browsers will not work.
Users with these browsers should read these
special instructions.
